Fork & Shock Services

 
 

 
 

What It Is

During fork and shock services we inspect suspension components to identify if there has been any erosion, cracking, or loosening of the parts (seals, bushings, shims, etc.). The services also include checking, draining and replacing old oil to ensure the proper lubrication to prevent the potential of scoring the inside of the suspension components. 

Why It’s Needed

Keeping on top of your services will help the rider and the bike maintain their performance and push towards their potential.  Having your suspension serviced helps shift the stress of the jumps and turns off of the rider, letting the riders focus on their technique and not on the inconsistent feel of timed out suspension.

When To Get It Done

On average, suspension should be brought in for a service every 40 – 50 hours of riding.

For race sets, suspension should be brought in for a service every 20 hours.

Fork Seal Change

 
 

 
 

 What Is It

A fork seal (oil seal) is a rubber seal that holds back the oil in the outer chamber of the fork.

Why It’s Needed

The main reason a fork seal can fail is due to damage caused to the lower tube. This commonly occurs from rocks or collisions with other riders. If you ride in sandy or muddy conditions, the potential is higher for dirt to get lodged into the fork seal, which can form a tear.

When To Get It Done

Inspection of the fork seals occurs during every Service. If you do not yet need a service but notice the seal has torn it is important to bring the fork in to be repaired to avoid any further damage to the fork. There is not a confirmed duration for how long your fork seals will last, since the riding conditions of the track effect the odds of a seal tearing a new seal could be required after a week, or after years. Unfortunately, this tear is not a malfunction of the part and is not something that can be avoided in most cases.

Re-Valves

 
 

 
 
 

What It Is

During a Re-Valve the suspension is torn down and internal components are inspected and analyzed to determine the updates that are needed. Identifying the rider’s size, capabilities and the type of riding they are doing will help classify the appropriate spring size to be used and the proper settings that should be put into the bike. Our settings have been developed through working with test riders for hours at the track to dial in the best setting for each type of bike. When a customer purchases a re-valve, getting the settings updated is part one. Part two involves having the customer join us at one of our track days so we can make sure you are dialed in and comfortable with the new settings.

Why It’s Needed

When a manufacturer builds a bike, they are building it for mass distribution and the stock settings are based on an assumption of who their largest customer base may be. Because of this all bikes are all set up generically and not every customer who buys the bike fits into that category. Getting a re-valve done moves the bike from being standardized for the average Joe, to being personalized for you and your specific riding. After having the re-valve done, most riders tend to feel more comfortable on the bike and have more stability and control.

When To Get It Done

Riders should have a re-valve completed anytime they get a new bike. Typically a full re-valve is only needed one time per set but the suspension should continue to be maintained through shock and fork services and valving adjustments discussed below.

Trackside Support

 
 

 
 

What It Is 

Trackside Support would consist of an average 2-3 hours at a local track. Starting the session with a once-over on the bike where we double check all the current adjustments, set pressures and check the sag. The track time will usually be broken down into multiple riding sessions to evaluate and discuss the performance of the suspension. Tips will be given on how to have the bike handle better with rider adjustments and information helping to explain how the suspension adjustments work will be discussed help set the rider up for success. At the end of the session, a Trackside Report will be provided outlining all details of the suspension and modifications made.

Why It’s Needed

If you feel like something isn’t quite right with the bike, or you want to get more one on one support to dial you in, a suspension diagnosis will help identify if the current set up is appropriate for the rider, or if additional changes are needed.

When To Get It

Trackside support may be best utilized a few days prior to a big race or event. Additionally, if you’re newer to the sport and just want to better understand your suspension and how to make adjustments through your day to day riding, give us a call and we can come out to help get you up to speed.

Valving Adjustments

 
 

 
 

What It Is 

A Valving Adjustment is the modification of shims in the suspension once the initial re-valve has already been completed. This offers customers the ability to make changes to the setting without the cost of paying for a re-valve again. Valves, or shims, are flat semi-flexible washers. When mixed and stacked with varying sizes it changes the speed the oil passes through the suspension making the bike feel softer, stiffer or slower depending on how the valving is completed.

Why It’s Needed

Stock valving can be unsafe when pushed to its limits. Since it is not specific to the rider, it may cause the rider to be unsettled or bottom out increasing the potential for injury.

When To Get It Done

Valving adjustments should be discussed when bringing a set of suspension in to be serviced. Not all services would require a valving adjustment. The need would be based on discussions of how the bike feels and has been handling on the track, if the rider is moving to a new type of terrain for riding, or if there has been a significant change to the weight being supported on the bike.
